Huayruros

Huayruro seeds are from Peru. These seeds are produced by trees
found in the Amazon basin. They come in over 110 species
including two of the most popular: solid red
(Ormosia macrocalyx), which are called "female" or huayruro
hembra, and red seeds with a black stripe (Ormosia amazonicas),
called "male" or huayruro macho.
Huayruros of
both varieties are commonly used for beading in Peru, where they
are often used for accents in necklaces and earrings. Their bold
red color gives them associations with fertility. They are also
reputed to promote health and to bring luck to their wearers. In
the Andes and on the coast, the "male" and "female" varieties
are often paired together, representing harmony and balance.
They have an oval
barrel shape. Since they are natural seeds, they vary in size,
but in general are about 6 x 4 x 4 mm.
